Nationwide rallies call for change
Federal Government & Opposition urged to 'wake up'
For Immediate Release: 13 August 2007
Victorian human rights group, Civil Union Action (CUA), says yesterday's rallies across Australia show that ignoring demands for same-sex relationship recognition is not only cruel, it's also passé.
The event marks the third anniversary of laws which effectively banned same-sex marriage.
Masses of Victorians joined the National Day of Action by marching from the State Library to Federation Square. Couples declared their love in the Midwinta vows ceremony, and politicians and community members addressed the crowd. Events were also held in other capital cities and rural New South Wales.
Civil Union Action spokesperson, John Kloprogge, said politicians cannot ignore same-sex relationships any longer.
"Both the Federal Government and Opposition seem to think same-sex relationship recognition only has minority support. They need to wake up," Mr Kloprogge said.
"A recent Human Rights and Equal Opportunity report found 58 federal laws discriminate against same-sex couples and their families. The case has been made, it's time for the politicians to act."
