Bracks “cannot escape” Civil Unions debate
Nationwide rallies push for same-sex relationship recognition

For Immediate Release: 13 August 2006

Melbourne-based same-sex relationship rights group, Civil Union Action (CUA), has urged the Bracks Labor Government to give a commitment to enact a Civil Union scheme for same-sex couples, following a larger-than-expected turnout of 1500 - 2000 people at today’s rally and mass commitment ceremony on the steps of Parliament House, Melbourne.

The Melbourne contingent of the National Day of Action was the largest in the country, with other rallies taking place in Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, Hobart, Lismore, Blue Mountains, Wagga Wagga and Dubbo.

Melbourne’s gay and lesbian community sent a powerful message to both State and Federal Governments about the level of support in the broader community for change.

"The Bracks Government cannot escape a debate on Civil Unions in Victoria. The momentum towards according loving, same-sex couples equal rights before the law is building every day," said CUA spokesperson John Kloprogge.

"The time for Civil Unions for Victorian same-sex couples is now," Mr Kloprogge added.

Liberal-turned-Independent state MP, Andrew Olexander, promised to defend the rights of same-sex couples through a private member’s bill for Civil Unions.

"The winds of change have come, Mr Bracks, for gays and lesbians - not only in Victoria but throughout the whole of Australia. There will be no turning back until we’ve won our freedom, our dignity and our respect, " Mr Olexander told the crowd.

"A Civil Union scheme would provide social equality, legal security and basic respect to Victorian same-sex couples and their families," Mr Kloprogge concluded.

Time for Bracks to act on Civil Unions
Nationwide rallies push for same-sex relationship recognition

For Immediate Release: 13 August 2006

Melbourne-based same-sex relationship rights group, Civil Union Action (CUA), has challenged the State and Federal Governments to take close heed of rallies held around the nation this weekend in support of relationship recognition for same-sex couples.

Rallies will be held this weekend in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, the Blue Mountains, Lismore, Wagga Wagga and Dubbo, coinciding with the second anniversary of amendments to the Marriage Act (Cth) 1961 passed by the Federal Parliament, on August 13 2004.

CUA urges all Victorians - gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and heterosexual - to join forces to make a positive statement in support of equality for same-sex couples, and urge the Bracks Government to support Civil Unions.

Today's Melbourne rally and mass commitment ceremony is tipped to be the largest of its kind in the city, and will send a powerful message to both State and Federal Governments about the level of support in the broader community for change. Prominent politicians and community
figures will address the crowd on the steps of Parliament House.

"The time for Civil Unions for Victorian same-sex couples is now," said CUA spokesperson John Kloprogge.

"CUA campaigners will attend today's rally. We do not want to find ourselves in 4 years time in the same position we’re in now: no Civil Unions, no guarantees. We will not sit back and wait until another election rolls around to act, when we can take the opportunity now," Mr Kloprogge added.

The Bracks Government has consistently said Civil Unions are not "on their agenda", while Opposition leader Ted Baillieu has personally supported such a relationship scheme. Liberal-turned-Independent MP, Andrew Olexander, will unveil his Private Member's Bill for Civil Unions at the rally today.

Meanwhile, the Western Australian branch of the National Party has passed a motion to support same-sex Civil Unions.

"The reforms by the Bracks Government in 2001 were very positive. But same-sex couples need a way of proving their relationship in law. Previous reforms are of limited benefit unless they are accessible to all Victorian same-sex couples," said Mr Kloprogge.

"If the Western Australian National Party can support Civil Unions for same-sex couples, why can't the Bracks Labor Government?" Mr Kloprogge asked.

"A Civil Union scheme would provide social equality, legal security and basic respect to Victorian same-sex couples and their families," Mr Kloprogge concluded.
